Both olfactometry and physical-chemical analysis are two methods used to evaluate the somehow relative annoyance caused by odorous substances. These techniques have several advantages and also some drawbacks although they can provide complementary information.

With the olfactometry technique odour threshold can be quantified but in most cases these parameters cannot be chemically linked to a substance or group of substances. On the other hand, a physical-chemical analysis can identify single substances that could be related with odorous episodes, but in most of the cases these relation is not possible. Physical-chemical analysis proportionates also information about the toxicity of certain odorous gases, however, there will hardly be a link between concentration of a substance and odour annoyance using this technique. As a short example, more than 500 molecules have been identified in a sample taken from a landfill (terpenes, sulphides, aldehydes, acids, acetones, alcohols, aromatic compounds, chlorides, esters, etc.).

LabService Analytica S.r.l., through its InterCinD division, has opened registration for IC2026ODOR, an accredited proficiency test (PT) scheme for gas analysis. The scheme is organised in accordance with the standard EN ISO/IEC 17043:2023 and is designed to help laboratories assess their analytical performance under conditions that reflect routine practice.

This edition covers two measurands: n-butanol and tetrahydrothiophene (THT). InterCinD will provide gas cylinders at two concentration levels for n-butanol and one set of cylinders for THT, allowing participants to evaluate both precision and accuracy within a structured interlaboratory comparison.

Olfasense GmbH has officially opened registration for its 2026 Proficiency Test (PT), inviting olfactometric laboratories worldwide to take part. Accredited since 2005, this PT provides laboratories with the opportunity to evaluate their performance in line with the criteria set out in EN 13725:2022, a key standard for laboratories maintaining ISO 17025 accreditation. The annual proficiency test continues to play a key role in confirming that laboratories meet international standards for olfactometric measurements.

The 2026 PT is again designed to help laboratories verify their compliance with the critical performance criteria of EN 13725:2022, focusing on precision under repeatability conditions and accuracy for 1-butanol. These parameters remain fundamental for assessing the reliability and consistency of olfactometric measurements. Moreover, participants will once more have the option to analyse Tetrahydrothiophen (THT), which will be included if at least eight laboratories register for this additional measurement.
