Advanced biofiltration biocassette to treat hydrogen sulfide and odor emissions.

   The Biocassette system was implemented in 2023 at a Murcia East WWTP pumping station to reduce gas emissions in unitary sewage systems, especially in areas with extreme weather conditions.

   This plug-and-play biofiltration equipment effectively removes VOCs, hydrogen sulfide, and ammonia with low water and electricity consumption. Its compact, modular design and high-efficiency inorganic bio-media ensure a long service life (4-5 years) and stable operation. This system presents a sustainable alternative to traditional deodorization technologies, offering efficient and reliable odor treatment.

Abstract

   In the unitary sewage systems, especially in population centres with low rainfall and extreme weather events, either precipitation or high temperatures, “heat waves”, high concentrations and emissions of gases can be generated due to the decomposition of organic matter. To minimize the emission of these chemical compounds, the Biocassette system came into operation in 2023 in a wastewater pumping station of the Murcia East WWTP. The biocassette system is a plug-and-play equipment with a compact and modular design, allowing advanced biofiltration to eliminate VOCs and compounds such as hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, etc. This equipment provides the service with low water and electricity consumption and with a long service life (4-5 years) thanks to the characteristics of the selected inorganic bio-media of high efficiency (where the degradation of the odorous compounds to be treated takes place) and a stable and reliable operation. This advanced biofiltration system can treat a flow rate of 250 m3/h and emissions up to 300 ppm of hydrogen sulfide.

   Advanced biofiltration systems are a clear alternative to other non-regenerative deodorization technologies (activated carbon, etc.), providing advantages in both ease of operation and environmental sustainability.
